1987 TVR 280i Series 2 Convertible: This auction is for a very low mileage 1987 TVR 280i convertible. As a little background, TVR Engineering Ltd. was formerly the largest independent manufacturer of sportscars in Britain, producing all of their cars by hand. 1987 was the last year TVR was in the U.S. market and only seven of these 280i convertibles were produced for this market in 1987, this car is the 4th of those 7 cars.
The body of the TVR is made of hand-laid fiberglass, mounted on a strong tubular steel chassis with 4-wheel independent suspension which provides for a lightweight car with excellent handling. The car is powered by the German-built Cologne Ford 2.8 litre V6 engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection mated to a Ford 4-speed manual transmission. The rear suspension features inboard mounted disc brakes which, combined with the front disc brakes, provides excellent stopping capability.
This particular 280i was equipped at the factory with power windows, air conditioning, and the very rare option of power assisted steering which was fitted to probably less than two dozen 280is in the US market. The power assisted steering gives you the nice assist at low speed manuvers, such as parking, but maintains a solid feel at highway speeds. The suspension features adjustable Spax shock absorbers at all four corners and the BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires have plenty of tread life remaining.
Earlier in 2008, I had all the interior woodwork stripped and refinished so it is all in excellent condition, as is the leather on the seats, the convertible top, and the rear window. The interior also features a pair of custom made TVR logo carpet overmats.
In the spring of 2007, I had the original and ineffective factory air conditioning system removed and replaced with a custom unit built by Vintage Air of Texas which provides cooling, heat and defrost in a very efficient package. I have always kept this car properly serviced and maintained so that it is a dependable, fun to drive exotic.
The car was just state inspected and is ready to go. This is a nice original TVR that has been well kept and just needs a new home. I am the president of the TVR Car Club North America and the owner of Classic Motor Works, the only TVR parts business in the US. I have been involved with, and driving TVRs for well over 30 years. This car comes complete with all books as well as a custom leather portfolio for keeping your records in. I just took this car on a 250+ mile trip about 10 days ago to a British Car show and it performed flawlessly. This is NOT a 100-point trailer queen, but a good dependable driver that will give you years of service and enjoyment.
I have listed my Buy It Now price so don't wait, take advantage of this now. Yes, you can buy cheaper 280is out there, but by the time you get them serviced, upgraded, and brought up to the level you really want, you'll have more in the cheaper car than I'm asking for mine that is ready to go.
I will consider delivery of the car to its buyer within a 300 mile radius for reimbursement of travel expenses.
